Sri Lanka’s Devastating Flood

Sri Lanka’s flood shook the country increasing the death toll to 164 people and 104 are still missing. The Disaster Management Centre reported the news on Monday.

The rains and strong winds started on May 24th affecting over 400,000 people’s lives. Nearly 100,000 people relocated to avoid the effects of the rain.

On Monday, the Meteorology Department warned of more heavy rains and strong winds. After which the government advised low lying areas in Southern Sri Lanka, residents to evacuate.

The Meteorology Department also reported the depression in the East Central Bay of Bengal had increased due to the Cyclonic storm “MORA.” But also added that it was moving away from the island.

The Department in its last report said, “Strong winds about 80kmph can be expected over the country and surrounding sea areas.”

A lot of aid is being sent to help Sri Lanka recover. Triforces and rescue teams collaborated to form a rescue team. The team will travel around the country distributing food and dry rations to the families that remained inside their homes.

President Maithripala Sirisena of Sri Lanka has confirmed that everything will be done to provide immediate relief to the victims. He also visited the worst affected areas to show his support and promised to rebuild the destroyed homes.
