On Tuesday night, one of the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) terminals operation was affected due to the ransomware attack called Wannacry. The same ransomware has impacted a number of central banks and many large corporations in Europe.

AP Moller-Maersk was one of the entities that were affected, they operate the Gateway Terminals India (GTI) at JNPT. This port has the capacity to work with 1.8 million standard container units.

A senior JNPT official reported, “We have been informed that the operations at GTI have come to a standstill because their systems are down (due to the malware attack.) They are trying to work manually.”

A spokesperson released a global statement that read, “We can confirm that Maersk’s IT systems are down across multiple geographies and business units due to a cyber attack. We continue to assess the situation. The safety of our employees, our operation, and our customer’s businesses is our top priority. We will update when we have more information.”

The JNPT has been closed off due to the cyber attack and the officials from JNPT have confirmed that they are working on resolving the issue. But at present to avoid cargo piling up officials have reported additional parking space will be made available.
