Mexico experienced the worst earthquake in nearly eight decades. The powerful earthquake measured an 8.1 magnitude claimed the lives of around 61 people. The earthquake tore buildings down and caused a mass evacuation in Oaxaca and Chiapas in southern Mexico.
The President Enrique Pena Nieto flew to Oaxaca that bore the major brunt of the earthquake.
The Mayor of the town, Gloria Sanchez said, “The situation is Juchitán is critical; this is the most terrible moment in its history.”
The earthquake has also sent out a tsunami warning and thousands have been evacuated from Chiapas. Although, later the warning was withdrawn.
A journalist described the incident, “You could hear loud cracks in the concrete. It sounded like a giant wooden branch being just broken open violently. People were streaming out of the hallways. And everybody walking out single file into the streets, trying to avoid overhead power lines.”
The last time an earthquake of this scale hit Mexico was in 1985 that caused the death of thousands.
