What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you think of Women’s Day? The day is celebrated internationally to empower women across the globe but why do we need to celebrate it? Why can’t you just sit, relax and talk about the way women dress, talk in public, or smoke and drink. Why do you need a day to empower a woman when you do not understand that she is beautiful irrespective of the lifestyle she chooses. It is quite common people of a patriarchal mindset to comment on a woman and her appearance. Are they the only ones to be blamed for this? Well, I think it is not one individual’s fault. It is the way a person is nurtured and brought up. However, this does not justify the argument. You are human after all and you cannot treat a woman the way you wish. So how do you justify your opinion about what a woman wears in public? Some say that a woman invites men by showing parts of their body in public. Does that mean that women should be dressed in burkas or cover her face under her pallu? Even if she does, she would still get questioned about the way she talks, breathes, lives and so on. One can not stop questioning women because they are considered weak both mentally and physically. So targeting a woman is the best option since many believe that woman can not raise their voice if harassed or raped!
The argument would be never ending, for people in India judge women and generalize everything around them. The constitution states that one can speak, move or give their opinion freely but why can’t a woman do the same? Why can’t she wear a skirt and walk freely without having to see men staring at her?
