Washington: Former U.S. President Donald Trump has issued a strong warning to BRICS nations, threatening 100% tariffs on their exports if they attempt to establish an alternative to the U.S. dollar in global trade. Trump, known for his firm stance on economic policies, reiterated that any move away from the dollar-dominated financial system would have severe economic repercussions.

“The time for watching BRICS’ actions is over. If these countries abandon the dollar and stop trading in our great U.S. economy, they must look elsewhere for economic benefits,” Trump declared on social media. He emphasized that if BRICS introduces a common currency, the U.S. will retaliate by imposing steep tariffs and restricting trade.

This warning comes in response to Russia’s recent push for BRICS nations to explore a common digital currency to facilitate investments. Russian President Vladimir Putin, during the BRICS Summit in Kazan, urged member countries to adopt new financial instruments. While Russia and India are already exploring digital currency transactions, analysts argue that dollar dependence remains deeply rooted.

A 2023 study by the Atlantic Council’s GeoEconomics Center suggested that despite BRICS’ efforts, the global dominance of the U.S. dollar remains unchallenged.
