On Tuesday, the Chief Proctor of Banaras Hindu University (BHU) O.N. Singh submitted his resignation to the Vice Chancellor Dr. Girish Chandra Tripathi. Mr. Singh is taking moral responsibility for the molestation of a young female student on the campus.

The University authorities accepted the resignation and reported a new chief proctor will be appointed.

News reports have revealed the Congress Party has demanded Prime Minister Narendra Modi to apologize to all those who were thrashed by the police during the riots at the BHU campus.

General Secretary of Congress, Mohan Prakash said, “The Prime Minister should first apologize to the girls in BHU because despite being there, he did not care to ask why the girls were protesting.”

The government, administration and the varsity vice chancellor have set up a number of inquiries into the violence at the campus. The Divisional Commissioner has been asked to file a report regarding the lathi charge by the police against the students, even the female students.

The University authorities have stated that the violence erupted by outsiders to tarnish the University’s name.

The violence started on Sunday and FIRs have been filed against 1,000 students at the Lanka Police Station for arson and other charges.

The students have been protesting the eve teasing incident that took place on 21st September. A female student of Arts was walking to her hostel when three men on a bike abused her and rode away after she resisted.

The woman is also declaring that the varsity security was not more than 100 meters away and did nothing to help her. Things took a turn for the worse when she informed her warden to take action against them. But the warden instead questioned why she was coming back so late.

The warden’s response angered the students who decided to take out a riot to get action.

According to the students at BHU, they have to deal with eve teasing on a regular basis. Even though multiple complaints have been made no action has been taken.
