On the 4th of August, the Editor in Chief, Dhanya Rajendran at The News Minute went to watch the film Jab Harry Met Sejal. After watching the film, Dhanya put up a tweet about how she felt regarding the movie with a special mention to the Tamil film Sura.
Sura is a Tamil film with actor Vijay in the leading role. Dhanya’s tweet read, “I watched Vijay’s Sura till (the) interval and walked out. #WhenHarryMetSejal has made me break that record. Could not sit till interval.”
Even though the tweet mainly targeted the movie Jab Harry Met Sejal, Vijay fans took offense and what began as trolling the editor turned into violent threats and an offensive hashtag.
The tweets that attacked her were ridiculous and unnecessary. One read, “Hats off to ur husband for not walking out even after these many years with you.”
On the 6th of August things started taking a violent turn. A tweet from Kettavan Memes read, “6 P.M.! Get Ready Dhanya Rajendran.”
And at 6 P.M. a hashtag called #PublicityBeepDhanya started trending on Twitter. The hashtag at one point was trending more than the Amarnath Terror Attacks. This showed how absurd people’s priorities really are. Twitter deleted the hashtag but not before nearly 32,000 tweets ridiculing one journalists’ opinion.
Dhanya even deleted the tweet to stop all the commotion but Vijay’s fans refused to back down.
The fans started pulling out old tweets of Dhanya’s to continue their ridiculous fight. Some even went as far as making up tweets and giving Dhanya credit for it. She responded to them with a tweet that read, “Just saw two screenshots of stuff I haven’t even tweeted.”
On August 6th Dhanya tweeted, “Just asked Chennai Police Commissioner. He said I should take a few screenshots and file a case. So will do just that.”
She filed a case in Chennai on the 8th of August. The case filed under Indian Penal Code section 354D (Stalking,) 516 (1)(Criminal Intimidation) and 507. The case was also filed under Information Technology Act 2000, TN Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act 2002 and Indecent Representation of Women Act 1986.
