After nearly two years, 10 year old Virendra Singh will finally be able to hold a pencil and use his right hand after a toe to hand surgery. Singh was in an immersion rod accident while bathing and suffered severe burn injuries forcing doctors to amputate both his hands.

The central government Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi conducted a complex toe to hand surgery on the boy restoring the functions in his right hand.

The boy’s toes were used to reconstruct a thumb and a finger which was attached to his hand with the restoration of blood circulation in it.

Birendar Singh, Virendra’s father said, “My son is very active in studies. He was in class 1 when he suffered the trauma. His life became so miserable that he was unable to do anything.”

The father went from hospital to hospital to find a doctor that could give a solution for his son.

Mr. Singh further said, “I wanted that somehow my child should be able to hold a pen and write. I brought him to Safdarjung Hospital around seven months ago and doctors planned to reconstruct his fingers from his toes.”

The doctors have confirmed Virendra will be able to write soon.

Chief operating surgeon, Dr. Rakesh Kain said, “It was a very complex surgery and its failure could have resulted in trauma to the patient. The child will now use his fingers to do a lot of his routine work.”
