The Telangana government has banned short life Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) and chlorinated plastics in an attempt to reduce environmental pollution. The government has also banned burning these plastics in public places.
Banners and large posters are generally made with Chlorinated plastics.
In December 2016, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) issued guidelines that have led to the ban.
The government has also issued that a fine will apply for violating the ban. Rs. 25,000 will be applied to massive burning of plastic. For minor burning of plastic will attract a fee of Rs. 5,000.
The Telangana Chief Secretary of Forest and Environment Department, Dr. Rajat Kumar issued the notification that said, “The local bodies also have been asked to establish waste to energy processes, including Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF), for combustible fraction of waste or supply as feedstock to solid waste-based power plants to thermal power plants and cement plants.”
The NGT released a statement last year that reported the usage of PVC and chlorinated plastic bags were dangerous and could cause Cancer. They also mentioned that these plastic bags also have adverse effects on the environment.
Last year in August, GHMC introduced the Public Waste Management Rules that instructed the sale, storage and use of plastic bags below 50 microns are banned.
The Chief Secretary has also sent out a warning for all those violating the Environmental Protection Act 1986 by dumping industrial wastes would attract cases against them.
