Most people make their physical disability their biggest disadvantage, but 17 year old Tuhin Dey is using it to his advantage. Tuhin is suffering from cerebral palsy and is confined to a wheelchair but the boy dreams big and is on his way to achieve it. Tuhin Dey belongs to West Midnapore district from West Bengal.
Tuhin uses his mouth to write and his chin to operate electronic gadgets. The boy completed his 10th exams with no help to write the tests and didn’t even take any extra time that is generally provided to disabled students. He is now in Kota preparing for his engineering entrance exams and hopes to join IIT. Tuhin also said how he would love to do his masters at Oxford University and his biggest dream would be to meet his hero, Stephen Hawking.
Tuhin Dey is working towards becoming a cosmologist in the future. Tuhin said, “I want to pursue my B.Tech from IIT Kharagpur followed by Masters from Oxford University. My biggest wish is to meet my hero Stephen Hawkins one day.”
Doctors treating Tuhin have said his disease is not like Stephen Hawking but one thing in common the two have is their brain has not been affected. “You need brain, not brawn, to get ahead in life. This congenital disease does not affect intelligence and as long as he can use a wheelchair to move and communicate, he will remain highly functional,” says Dr. Yash Gulati, Senior Orthopedic Surgeon and the surgeon for the President of India.
Tuhin has also been awarded the National Child Award for Exceptional Achievement in the year 2012 and in 2013, Best Creative Child Award with Disabilities from President Pranab Mukherjee.
Tuhin has the unending support from his parents, his mother, Sujatha quit her job to give Tuhin complete attention. She was quoted saying, “Tuhin is our world. Nothing is bigger for us than him.”
