A Special Investigation Team (SIT,) on the 20th of September, arrested Swami Chinmayanand, a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP,) in light of the rape allegations against him.
Swami Chinmayanand is facing rape charges. A 23 year old law student, who is a resident of Shahjahanpur, alleged Chinmayanand of raping her for a year and of kidnapping her.
On the 3rd of September, the Supreme Court (SC) intervened in the matter and ordered a SIT be formed to investigate the matter.
An official of the SIT said Chinmayanand was arrested and will undergo a medical examination.
The SIT first took Swami Chinmayanand to King George’s Medical University in Lucknow for the medical examination as he was not keeping well for the past few days. After performing several tests, the doctors said he is suffering from diarrhoea.
Swami Chinmayanand has several health issues like high blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetes.
Swami Chinmayanand was arrested after the victim handed evidence against him, a pen drive, to the SIT. The pen drive contains a total of 43 videos.
Naveen Arora, the Inspector General (IG) of Uttar Pradesh Police, is heading the SIT.
The SIT is investigating the matter and is expected to submit a detailed report to the Allahabad High Court on the 23rd of September.
