The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is trying to fight the increasing air pollution levels in Hyderabad by making breathing easier for the City’s citizens.

The GHMC decided to set up outdoor air purifying units across Hyderabad.

Strata Enviro, a firm, sent a proposal to the GHMC and agreed to provide 500 air purifying units.

On the 7th of November, the GHMC approved the proposal, following which, the firm would set up units in Gachibowli, Jubilee Hills and Panjagutta, where the air pollution is high due to the traffic jams, industries and offices.

The air purifiers would take in polluted air, filter it and release fresh air for the people.  The cost of one unit ranges from Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 12 lakhs, based on its capacity.

On the 10th of November, particulate matter (PM) 2.5 was said to be between 91 and 154 at different monitoring locations in Hyderabad.

Amol Chaphekar, the Managing Director of Strata Enviro, said, “The first two years after forming the Company in 2016 went in trying to prove that the technology works. Our air filtering system is patented and has been proven successful in Mumbai and Delhi. In Delhi, the air purifiers have been mounted on the buses; when the bus stops due to traffic, the air purifier becomes operational and cleans the air. We even got a grant from the Department of Science after they were satisfied with our project.”

However, the GHMC is still considering the proposal of Mr. Amol for 500 units across Hyderabad.

The GHMC is also expected to decide about the funding for the air purifiers.

As of the 11th of November, the Air Quality Index (AQI) in Hyderabad is 161, which is considered unhealthy.
