India on the 19th of May, reported the highest single day fatalities from the Wuhan virus.  

In the past 24 hours, India reported 4,529 deaths, 2,67,334 new cases and 3,89,851 discharged/recovered cases from the Wuhan virus, also known as the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19.)  Though death cases increased, active cases have dropped by more than 1.27 lakh with the vaccination of 13.12 lakh people  in 24 hours. Amongst the deceased, India has witnessed deaths of 270 doctors during the second wave of the Wuhan virus.  The figure was confirmed by the Indian Medical Association (IMA.)

In addition, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) confirmed 20,08,296 tests conducted in the past 24 hours, taking the total to 32,03,01,177 till date.  The data is also available on the official website of the ICMR- https://www.icmr.gov.in/

The figures of the deadly virus were updated by the Union Health Ministry and are available on the official website of the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW.)

According to the MoHFW data, India now has 25,496,330 positive cases, of which 32,26,719 are active cases, 2,83,276 deceased cases and 21,986,363 recovered/discharged cases. 

India has the second highest caseload after the United States of America (U.S.A.) 

The top five states which have registered the maximum cases are Tamil Nadu with 33,059 cases, followed by Kerala with 31,337 cases, Karnataka with 30,309 cases, Maharashtra with 28,438 cases and Andhra Pradesh with 21,320 cases.  These top five states account for 54.05 %  of the new cases reported.  Of which, Tamil Nadu alone is responsible for 12.37 % of the new cases.

The southern states of Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka, are the three worst hit states in the country.  However, in terms of fatalities, the maximum casualties were reported in Maharashtra (1,291), followed by Karnataka with 525 daily deaths.  

In addition, Dr. V.K. Paul of the NITI Aayog, on the 18th of May, addressed the media and said clinical trials for COVID-19 vaccines for the 2-18 age group would begin in the next 10-12 days. 

As of now, the two India made vaccines against the Wuhan virus are available to people  who are 44 years or above.   The two India made vaccines are the Serum Institute of India (SII) manufactured Covisheild and the Hyderabad based Bharat Biotech International Private Limited manufactured COVAXIN. 

In addition, till date approximately 19 crore people received the COVID-19 vaccination doses.
