Farmers in parts of Telangana are facing challenges as water shortages affect standing crops during an important stage of the farming season. The situation has raised concerns over irrigation facilities and the support available to farmers.
BRS leader T Harish Rao has urged the Congress government to take immediate steps to protect crops in Wanaparthy district. During a visit to Alwala village in Peddamandadi mandal, he inspected affected paddy fields and demanded that all five motors of the Kalwakurthy Lift Irrigation Project operate round the clock.
He also sought another 15 days of water from the Jurala project to help farmers save their crops. Harish Rao said around 250 acres of farmland had dried up in Alwala village alone.
He claimed that the Srisailam and Jurala projects had received substantial water inflows but the available water was not used properly. He also urged the government to speed up the Palamuru-Rangareddy project and fill the Karivena and Vattem reservoirs.
Harish Rao further demanded crop-loss compensation, timely Rythu Bharosa payments and support for agricultural labourers. He said the BRS would raise farmers’ concerns in the Assembly.
