Pune Metro Set For A Major Expansion

Pune is seeing a major push to improve public transport as the city continues to grow. New metro routes are expected to make daily travel easier for office workers, students and other commuters.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on November 3 inaugurated the Hinjawadi-Maan to Shivajinagar Metro Line 3 and laid the foundation stones for four new corridors under Pune Metro Phase II. The projects have a combined value of ₹21,800 crore.

The 23-km Line 3 has 23 stations. Services will begin for passengers on November 4, with 17 stations opening in the first phase. The remaining six stations are expected to open by January 2027.

The four new corridors will connect Vanaz to Chandani Chowk, Ramwadi to Vitthalwadi, Kharadi to Khadakwasla, and Nal Stop to Manik Baug.

A key feature of Line 3 is that women train operators will run the entire service. Around 30 per cent of its energy needs will come from solar power.

The new routes are expected to reduce traffic pressure, cut travel time and support Pune’s growth.
