India is working to build a stronger electronics and semiconductor industry. The country is also looking to increase local production and reduce its dependence on imported components.
As part of these efforts, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw launched the Semicon 2.0 web portal on November 6. He also announced 12 new approvals under the Electronics Components Manufacturing Scheme (ECMS).
The new portal will accept applications under three areas: machines and materials, setting up more chip factories, and strengthening chip packaging and testing facilities.
The 12 approved projects involve an expected investment of ₹7,503 crore. They are expected to create 7,127 direct jobs and support production worth ₹39,045 crore.
The projects cover 10 product groups, including circuit boards, copper foil, battery materials and camera parts. They will be set up across seven states, including Gujarat, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu.
With these approvals, the total number of projects under ECMS has reached 118, with an expected investment of ₹77,051 crore.
The government aims to strengthen local manufacturing and make India a major global centre for electronics production.
