The Telangana Government initiated a plastic ban at all municipal bodies in the State. On Wednesday the Government issued guidelines to ban plastic in urban local bodies. The State directed the heads of all corporations and municipal bodies to take the lead in implementing the ban.

Principal Secretary for Municipal Administration Arvind Kumar sent a letter to all the municipal commissioners. The letter directed the commissioners to implement a strict ban.

In the letter, Mr. Kumar said, “The department should be in the forefront in implementing this initiative. Municipal Administration Minister K. T. Rama Rao has already stopped using bottled water.”

This comes after KTR expressed his displeasure over the use of plastic at Government offices. KTR instructed Arvind Kumar to initiate a list of strict rules to ensure implementation of the ban.

The Government plans to use more environment friendly materials like steel and ceramic bottles and glasses. Currently, India generates 56 lakh tonnes of plastic waste every year.
