30 killed due to landslides in Darjeeling

Darjeeling: Nearly 30 people were killed in Darjeeling on Wednesday due to landslides triggered by heavy downpour. On Tuesday night, the rainfall triggered landslides across the hills and claimed many lives. Several houses swept away when people were in sleep. Many reports of major damages have also been registered.

At Tingling Tea Garden under Mirik block of Kurseong sub-division, 19 people lost their lives and seven were killed in Kalimpong sub-division, which received more than 200mm of rainfall. Two were killed at Thane Line and three others at Mahindragaon in Mirik. According to officials, 10 people are missing in Mirik.

The rescue operations are underway and several bodies are to be recovered. The 25 major landslips have also damaged many roads. The bridge connecting Mirik and Siliguri has been washed away near Simulbari.
