The Black Fungus cases, a major side effect of post COVID-19 is rising in India. Amongst Indian states, the Telugu state of Telangana is at the 7th position in reporting the maximum number of Black Fungus cases.

The Black Fungus infection also known as Mycormicosis, is a threat to the ones who recovered from the deadly Wuhan virus. The major reason behind these side effects are the usage of steroid drugs to cure those infected with the Wuhan virus. The steroids help with the breathing difficulty, however the same steroids make the body susceptible to the fungus, which is already in the soil and can be airborne.

Recently, the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) released the data of Indian states with most of the Black Fungus cases. In the list, Telangana stood at the 7th position with 2,578 Black Fungus cases. The other 6 states with the high number of Black Fungus cases are: Maharashtra (9,654) cases, followed by Gujarat (6,846,) Andhra Pradesh (4,209,) Tamilnadu (4,075,) Karnataka (3,648) and Rajasthan (3,536.)

It is to be noted, the State run ENT Hospital and Koti Hospital are identified as the nodal hospitals for treating the Black Fungus infected people. In addition to the ENT Hospital, the State run Gandhi Hospital and Sarojini Eye Hospital would also treat Black Fungus patients.

Meanwhile, on the 27th of May, the Telangana Government declared the Black Fungus as an epidemic disease under the Epidemic Act 2005. Most of the Black Fungus cases were reported in between the months of June and July. By the 27th of May 2021, Telangana had a total of 744 cases of the Black Fungus infection.
