The Election Commission of India (ECI,) on the 16th of April, announced, the Tripura Lok Sabha elections in the 2nd phase stand cancelled and are scheduled to take place during the 3rd phase.

The Lok Sabha elections are divided into 7 phases, scheduled on the 11th of April, 18th of April, 23rd of April, 29th of April, 6th of May, 12th of May and the 19th of May.

On the 11th of April, a total of 20 states contested the 1st phase of the Lok Sabha elections.

Previously, the Tripura East constituency was scheduled to contest the Lok Sabha elections in the 2nd phase, on the 18th of April.

According to sources, the ECI received an intelligence report and cited security failure as the reason for postponing the elections.

The ECI said, “Law and order situation prevailing, is not conducive to the holding of the free and fair poll, citing reports of state chief electoral officer and special police observer.”

Sriram Taranikanti, the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Tripura, said, “Everyone saw what happened during polling on April 11. I have travelled to different districts and saw videos where activities, which were against the rules of Election Commission of India, were seen.”

The Tripura Lok Sabha elections for the Tripura East constituency will be held in the third phase of the Lok Sabha elections, scheduled on the 23rd of April.

On the 11th of April, Tripura contested the Lok Sabha elections and faced issues such as the malfunctioning of the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and violence.

The major parties contesting the Lok Sabha elections are the Indian National Congress (INC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP.)

The results of the Lok Sabha elections will be announced on the 23rd of May 2019.
