Understanding North Korea’s ICBM Hwasong 15

While North Korea’s Leader Kim Jong Un engages himself with missile tests, the U.S. President Donald Trump is engrossed with trading insults. If North Korea really has the power to bomb the U.S., President Trump should cease his schoolyard insults for a while.

North Korea recently released images of what they call Hwasong 15, claiming it is capable of striking “the whole mainland of the U.S.”

President Trump tweeted, “The Chinese Envoy, who just returned from North Korea, seems to have had no impact on Little Rocket Man. Hard to believe his people, and the military, put up with living in such horrible conditions. Russia and China condemned the launch.”

The technical expert from the Union of Concerned Scientists, David Wright said, in the first stage of Hwasong 15 the bottom part that propels it off the launcher has two engines. “We are trying to figure out what those may be and how powerful they are.”

The second stage is said to carry more than twice as much propellant as the Hwasong 14, the previously tested Inter Continental Ballistic Missile (ICBM.)
“The combination of those two things means it really is a new, more capable missile,” Wright added.

It is said the addition of two engines doubled the second stage thrust allowing the missile to reach a higher peak altitude. The missile reached a height of 4,506 Km which is ten times as high as the International Space Station.

The curved head of the ICBM lowers the heat inside the missile allowing it to withstand the temperature during re entry. Experts believe North Korea has not yet mastered the re entry. If North Korea’s claims on mastering the re entry are true, this might prove fatal.
