Prime Minister of India Mr. Narendra Modi finally broke his silence and issued an official statement regarding the Manipur violence against two women.

Ahead of the Monsoon Parliament Session on the 20th of July, Mr. Narendra Modi said, “Incident of Manipur which has come to the fore is shameful for any civilisation. The country is shamed.  I appeal to all chief ministers to strengthen laws to take stringent action against crime, especially against women.  The incident might be from Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh or Manipur, the culprit should not go scot-free in any corner of the country.”

He further said, “ I assure my countrymen that no culprit will be spared. What happened to the daughters of Manipur will never be unpardoned.”

Occurred on the 4th of May, the violence against two women, who were allegedly gang raped and were forced to parade naked, finally got the attention of the powerful authorities.

After the video went viral on the 18th of July, Bollywood celebrities, politicians and mainstream media are making noise, demanding justice for the women and punishment for the accused.   Notably, on the 4th of May, two women were abducted from a police van, when they were being shifted to a safe place in the violence hit Manipur.  Getting into the details, an angry tribal mob kidnapped the two women, stripped them and forced them to parade naked on the streets of the burning city.  Reports claim that the two women were also gang raped in a paddy field and assaulted brutally.

The incident failed to reach the citizens of the nation as the internet was suspended in the State of Manipur, which was recently restored.  The triggering disturbing incident also raises concerns regarding security of Manipur citizens, especially women and highlights the failure of the ruling government.

It is to be noted, neither the State Government, nor the Central Government and the police spoke about the incident and took appropriate action against the culprit.  The matter got attention two months after the incident, when the video circulated widely online, pointing fingers at the authorities in power.

The Indian National Congress, Bollywood celebrities and netizens raised questions and demanded strict action against the culprits.

Sadly, the culprits were roaming freely until now, when the matter escalated, following which the Manipur Police issued an official statement and said, they have registered zero first information report (FIR) earlier and later nabbed the accused.
