On Monday, the UP CM Adityanath Yogi convinced villagers into cremating the body of Constable Prem Sagar. Sagar was one of the two soldiers killed on Monday and mutilated by Pakistan at Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir.

On Wednesday, Prem Sagar was cremated in the early hours, 11 hours after his body was brought to Deoria, his native in Uttar Pradesh. The jawan’s family refused to cremate the body for several hours until the casket was opened and shown to them. The family also demanded to meet the CM Adityanath Yogi. The CM spoke to the family at midnight and the jawan’s daughter said, “He said he would visit us before the 13-day Shraadh ceremony. He also promised a school and a memorial in my father’s name.”

Sagar and Naib Subedar Paramjit Singh were patrolling the area near LoC and were part of a three-member team to check the snapped lines. They were captured by Pakistani Border Action Team (BAT), which included both terrorists and army personnel. Their bodies were found on Monday at 8:30 AM. The police suspect the involvement of Lashkar-e-Taiba, which is allegedly backed by Pakistan Army.

Sagar’s daughter expressed her anger and said, “I want 50 heads for his sacrifice”. While Sagar’s family expressed anger, Singh’s family refused to believe he was dead, pointing to the coffin they said, “Whose body is this? It is all behind (concealed in) this box.” Singh’s wife, Paramjit Kaur, insisted on the last look and was distraught at the sight of the headless body. Singh’s 12-year daughter asked the jawan’s “Where is my father’s head?”, to which no one had an answer.

Indian officials warned Pakistan and swore ‘unequivocal’ response. Delhi had warned Pakistan that the army will take revenge and give a befitting reply.
