Arjun MK-II Tanks To Be Upgraded

The Indian homegrown Arjun Mk-II tanks will finally be upgraded next year. A Government Official explained the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is working on a new indigenous missile to fire from inside the tank.

This project was planned in 2013 but faced a huge setback after the Israeli missile did not fit the Indian Army’s requirements. At present, the DRDO is testing the missile to meet the requirement of hitting a target at 1,200 meters and less.

In 2013, the Israeli LAHAT (Laser Homing Anti Tank) missile was rejected by the Indian Army. The missile could engage targets only at ranges beyond 1,500 meters. It cost Rs. 20 crores for the DRDO and the Indian Army to test LAHAT. The expenditure was later dubbed as unfruitful by the National Auditor.

The DRDO stated the new upgrades will include 80 improved features including 15 major technology upgrades. The main changes proposed for the tank are better firepower, advanced laser warning, a countermeasure system and integrated explosive reactive armor. The tank will also have an advanced navigating system, enhanced night vision capabilities and a remotely operable anti aircraft weapon.
