Bharatiya Janata Party leader and Union Minister Uma Bharti, is quite famous for her strict actions against culprits and is popularly known to as a firebrand. On Thursday, the Minister raised her poll pitch in the Agra for elections in Uttar Pradesh when she said that she ensured rapists were tortured for their crime and ‘Pleaded for forgiveness’ when she was the CM of the state.
In a video, she was quoted saying, “Rapists should be tortured in front of victims until they beg for forgiveness. When I was the CM, I made them do it.” These statements were believed to be aimed at the Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav’s failure to take strict action on the Bulandshahr rape of mother and daughter by robbers. She slammed the BSP for letting out the culprits on bail.
Referring to her time as the CM of the Madhya Pradesh State she explained how she made the policemen torture rapists and asked the victims to watch this torture so as that they get ‘closure’. The 57 year old said, “I would tell the cops to hang the rapists upside down and beat them so hard that they would cry out. I would tell women to watch through windows of the police station.”
She also added that “They (rapists) should be hung upside down and salt and chilly should be rubbed on their wounds until they scream. Mothers and sisters should watch so they can get closure.” Speaking about her history, she said, “I told people who behave like demons cannot have human rights. Their heads should be cut off like Ravana’s.”
The police apparently asked the then CM to show consideration and not punish through brutally, which was denied by Uma Bharti who said that the rapists deserve the punishment. She also said that they should not be shown any mercy as rapists showed none to their victims.
