To combat the increasing number of motor accidents in Hyderabad, the City Traffic Police imposed a pillion rider helmet rule.

Starting from the 22nd of October, the Telangana Traffic Police imposed the rule, which would attract a penalty if the pillion rider on a motorcycle is without a helmet. As per the Motors Vehicle Act 1989, riding a two-wheeler without wearing a helmet attracts a penalty of Rs. 100. Now, the same penalty would be imposed for the pillion rider, as well.

The decision to impose the rule has been taken to control the number of road accidents and increase safety precautions for the people of Hyderabad, Telangana, especially those riding bikes and two wheelers. In the first half of 2021, till June, a total of 134 people died on the spot due to road accidents in Hyderabad, of which 95 were due to rash driving, 6 were drunk driving, 8 were wrong side driving, 3 were underage (below 18) driving and 15 were cases of negligence. Besides this, a total of 25,43,897 people have been registered under no helmet offense in the past 7 months (January 2021-July 2021.)

Apart from implementation of the pillion rider helmet rule, the Traffic Police also imposed fines for those without face masks. To ensure everyone in the City is following the Wuhan virus, also known as the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19,) appropriate behavior. In addition, to trace violators of the face mask rule, police are using surveillance cameras and Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques.

Under the Disaster Management Act, COVID-19 behavior violators, especially ones without a face mask need to pay a fine of Rs. 1,000. The violator would also have to face charges under Section 51(b) of the Disaster Management Act.
