The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) has urged the Telangana government to scrap its centralised tender system for supplying essential goods to residential schools and welfare hostels. The party alleged that the system has led to higher costs and delays in supplies to students.
Speaking at a meeting with members of the Telangana Gurukul Contractors Association on Tuesday, BRS leader T. Harish Rao alleged irregularities in a contract worth ₹800 crore. He called for a return to the earlier system, where local vendors supplied goods to individual institutions.
BRS leader T. Harish Rao claimed that the contract rates were 35% to 45% higher than those offered by local suppliers. He also alleged that supplies had reached only 280 of nearly 4,000 hostels, with some goods lacking proper bills and expiry dates.
He further questioned the selection of NACOFF, alleging that the company had faced action over violations. He also cited media reports about alleged payments linked to the tender.
The BRS said local vendors should be allowed to supply provisions through district-level committees. Harish Rao warned that the party would launch a larger protest if the government did not withdraw the system.
The allegations have been made by the BRS and were not independently verified in the report.
